Obituary for Wayne Gokey
Wayne Gokey passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 21, 2022 with his loving fiancé, Jennifer Swiecicki by his side. In addition to Jennifer, Wayne leaves his one and only daughter Wendy Cowin of South Burlington, VT, his two-grandsons, Jamison Cowin and Jacob Cowin, and one great-granddaughter Emma.
Wayne was pre-deceased by his parents, Theresa Gokey Brooks and Byron Gokey, as well as his older brother Robert Gokey. He is survived by his younger brother John Byron Gokey of South Hero, VT and his sister Susan Gokey of Strafford, NH.
Wayne was born in 1951 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville VT, grew up in Burlington, and graduated Burlington High School in 1970. After high school he worked at E.B. & A.C. Whiting Company where he held a variety of positions and eventually found his career path in the Research and Development Division. With approximately 10 years of experience gained in R & D, he left his position at Whiting Company and joined IBM where he worked for nearly twenty years, until as part of the many restructures at IBM, Wayne’s position was eliminated.
Wayne hated the cold weather and with his new found freedom he packed up and hit the road for warmer weather and the beaches. He eventually landed in Daytona Beach where he became a beloved member of the Main Street Community. He worked at Froggy’s Saloon for several years where he was affectionately known as “Sonny”. He was deeply loved. He was a jokester, he had an infectious laugh and beautiful blue eyes. He could make you feel like a million bucks. He was full of shenanigans, a bit of a bad boy but mostly a beautiful boy.
Wayne leaves behind a large circle of close friends and extended family, too many to name but he loved you all. A celebration of life is being planned. The family will announce details as they become available.
