Obituary for Patricia Cooney
Patricia Anne Cooney was born on August 2, 1936 in Teaneck, New Jersey. She passed away peacefully on July 4th in Altamonte Springs, Florida surrounded by her family. Patricia was the daughter of Edward Menjou and Marion Earnshaw. Until moving to Florida in 2015, she was a lifelong resident of Bergen County. An Honors graduate of Hackensack High School, Pat’s keen analytic and mathematic skills were put to great use as a bookkeeper. It was in this role that she met her future husband, Joseph Cooney, who at the time was a telephone installer for New Jersey Bell. The couple married in 1961 and moved to Teaneck in 1965 where they raised their family and resided for the next 50 years.

“Mahwah” as she is affectionately called by her grandchildren, loved a good cup of tea and was an avid reader (murder mysteries being her genre of choice – she often warned us that she “took good notes”). This lifelong passion for books and learning was passed on to her grandchildren. She possessed an extremely sharp wit, a disposition for timely one-liners, and could stop you in your tracks with the simple raised arch of an eyebrow. Mahwah was not your typical mom or grandmother and for that we will always be grateful.

Pat was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 2015. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Yvonne Norton; her children, John and Carolyn (Arias); daughter-in-law, Janelle and son-in-law David Arias; grandchildren, Brianna, Siobhan, Reagan, Alex, and Marissa; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
