Obituary for June Collins
Charlotte June Collins, 98, of Oviedo, Florida, formerly of Catlin, Illinois, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Madison Oviedo Assisted Living in Oviedo, Florida. She was born June 1, 1922 in Vermilion County, Illinois to Charles J. & Inez Tuttle Simmonds. June married Robert E. Collins on June 7, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away December 22, 1996. Survivors include: 2 daughters: Elaine (Edward) Leitelt of Naperville, Illinois and Pamela (Tom) Storm of Casselberry, Florida; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by 1 brother.
June was a graduate of Eastern State Teachers College and received her Master’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University. Most of her teaching career was based in First Grade having been active for 2 years at Bethel Grade School, Grape Creek School for 1 year, Danville District 118 for 8 years and Catlin Grade School for 17 years.
June was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years for her daughter’s troops. Weekends and summers were spent on nature walks, monthly camping outings with the Danville Camping Club and traveling on yearly family vacations.
June was a charter member of the Catlin Heritage Museum and had served on the board of directors. She was member of Catlin United Methodist Church, National Retired Teachers Assn, Home Extension Club, and the Adult Literacy Program at Danville Area Community College. She enjoyed painting & needlepoint. After moving to Florida in 2000, June participated in the Mary Martha Group at the Tuscawilla United Methodist church. She continued her love of painting with weekly lessons.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, memorials in Oveido,FL and Catlin, IL will be planned at a later date.
Memorials can be made in June’s name to the Catlin Heritage Museum or the Catlin United Methodist Church.
