Joseph Charles Racke, born on September 28, 1929, in Newark, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, in Oviedo, Florida.
At the age of 17, Joseph embarked on a distinguished military career by enlisting in the United States Army in 1947. Over the course of 32 years of dedicated service, he rose through the ranks to retire as a Brigadier General. His time in the military was a source of immense pride and fulfillment, making it one of his most significant life achievements.
Joseph is lovingly remembered by his daughters Janet Racke-Bailey (Bud), Jolene Racke (Cookie), and Jeanne Dunaway (Dennis). He was a devoted grandfather to Erin Newlands (Kevin), Megan Decker (Brett), Chad Dunaway, and Brian Dunaway (Rose). His legacy lives on through his cherished great-grandsons, Brooks Decker and Everest Dunaway.
He was predeceased by his wives Grace Racke and Jane Ann Kahlor; his parents Joseph and Loretta Racke; and his brother Francis Racke.
Joseph’s life was defined by his unwavering devotion to God, country, and his family. His memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration for all who were fortunate to share in his life.
He will be laid to rest with honors at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Cancer Society.
