Gary Ray Vest (NW5E), 75 of Geneva Florida, gave his last code “73” transmission (best regards) and passed peacefully in his sleep Sunday, April 21st, 2024. Gary was surrounded by family and friends throughout the last several weeks bringing much joy and happiness to his last days.
Gary will best be remembered for his service and commitment to the Geneva and Oviedo communities, including his church family as an active member of the CrossLife Church and 1st grade children’s ministry. In over 30 years of faithful service to the church he has been a positive influence on the lives of countless children and was a positive role model for generational fellowship. Gary was also an active volunteer with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (COPs program) conducting comfort calls on elderly and disabled citizens of Seminole County.
Gary (NW5E) was an avid Amateur Radio (HAM) operator for 67+ years, attaining his FCC license at the age of 8. Gary competed in numerous HAM radio competitions throughout his HAM career as well as, supporting disaster communications while living in Maryland, Texas, and Florida.
Gary is preceded by his loving wife Barbara Smith Vest of Geneva FL, his father Paul Ray Vest and mother Phillis Irene Cooper, of Huntington WVA.
Gary is survived by his sister Pamela Leigh Vest of Winchester VA, son David of Hollywood MD, his daughter-in-law, Christine of Murrells Inlet SC, 4 grandchildren, Jason D Seagle (Rene) of Whitehall MD, Justin D Seagle (Hannah) of Finksburg MD, Taylor D Seagle of Chattanooga TN and Jackson D Seagle of Murrells Inlet SC. Gary is also survived by his 1st great grandson, Walker J Seagle, of Finksburg MD, along with nieces and nephews and their extended families. Gary’s family extended well beyond the bloodlines to include his dearest friends of the Geneva General Store in Geneva FL.
A memorial service for Gary will be held Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at CrossLife Church, Old Sanctuary. Family will receive friends during the viewing from 10-11am, followed by memorial service officiated by Pastor Herb Long 11am-12pm. A no-host fellowship luncheon will follow the memorial service at the Geneva General Store, all are invited to celebrate Gary’s life and rejoice in his arrival to the Kingdom of God.
Gary will be interned at Gastonia NC alongside his wife Barbara, at a private funeral at a later date.
